Standards For Referee Certification

In an effort to have consistent, quality referees in NC, the NCRA has developed the following program.

Initial certification requirements:

·        Attend a free rules clinic (offered at all state sanctioned tournaments)

·        Pass the written test with at least a score of 86 or above (closed book test)

·        Referee 10 matches (8 matches at any level plus the 2 assessed matches below)

·        Two match assessments with a score of at least 90 on each (Must be a men’s B singles or higher semi final or final match, and a men’s B/C doubles or higher semi final or final match) Selection of matches must be approved by assessor

·        Pay a $10 fee

·        Certification is good for three years

o       A player will only be allowed one attempt to pass the written test and match assessment at each tournament.

Upon successful completion of certification you will be paid $10 per match at participating tournaments. The NCRA will provide each certified referee with a laminated card and bag tag stating their certification and expiration date. They will also receive an NCRA lapel pin.

Current USRA certified referees are exempt from the requirement to referee 10 matches and must be assessed on doubles only. All other requirements apply.

Certified Referee Requirements:

·        Attend at least one Referee Case Study clinic each year

·        A yearly-unannounced observation by a state representative will be done on each certified referee to ensure you are maintaining a high standard of refereeing.

·        At the end of your three-year certification you will be required to retake the written test (86), attend a clinic of your choice (rules or case study), pass the match assessment (90) and pay $10.00.

Pending Certification

·        Pass the written test with a score of at least a 86.

·        Attend a Rules Clinic

·        Pay fee of $10.00

·        Working on completing your required 10 matches

·        You have 12 months to complete all requirements to attain certification.  Failure to do so will require the player to start the certification process from the beginning.

While your certification is pending you will be paid $5 per match.

The NCRA will offer 2 types of clinics.

  • Rules Clinic: this clinic will go over the basic rules of the game and what are your responsibilities as a referee.
  • Case Study Clinic:  go over rules interpretation and different scenarios that have/may occur while refereeing.

The NCRA has the right to revoke or place a certification in the pending status in the best interest of the sport of racquetball.  The NCRA also reserves the right to add and or delete requirements to this document.

The NCRA has developed this referee certification process to increase knowledge and application of the rules that will increase the standards of referees in the state of North Carolina.
